This collection is in memory of my dear friend Amy.
I started making these ceramic apples when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Apples with all their storied associations represent health to me. So many of us were fervently trying to cast good intentions out into the universe during that time, anything to get those slim survival percentages to move in Amy’s favor. And so, creating these became my meditation and hope.
Amy was Amy to the very end,
writing, collaborating, encouraging and loving. And that extended to these little creations. It’s time that they make their way into the world and seed hope for another woman, to help her regain her health and move forward with her life.
The proceeds of this sale will go to the Amy Krouse Rosenthal Foundation that is committed to supporting research for early detection of ovarian cancer. Early detection is the key to adding years of memories and experiences to a woman’s life after an ovarian cancer diagnosis.
There are 365 apples, reckoning back to the hope of health.
Each is unique. Some get to show off in pretty boxes because life should be celebrated, some rest on Lake Michigan stones, eschewing fancy trimmings like Amy but still able to catch and hold ones’ attention, and some are just comfortable in their own skin. Each of the handmade boxes is unique as well, created from seven pieces of bookbinding board and paired with just the right apple.
